If you’re moving to the Springfield, Missouri area, you’re not just relocating to a new home—you’re gaining access to some of the most beautiful outdoor spaces in the Ozarks. At Lake Movers, we’ve helped a lot of folks move to and around Springfield, and one thing we always hear (and agree with) is how amazing the outdoor lifestyle is here.

From scenic hiking trails to peaceful lakeside walks, here are some of our favorite nature spots within about 75 miles of Springfield. Whether you’re a weekend hiker, a hardcore trail runner, or just love spending time in the fresh air, there’s something here for you.

1. Springfield Conservation Nature Center

This is a gem right inside the city. It’s a quiet escape that makes you feel like you’ve driven hours into the woods—but you’re still in Springfield. With 80 acres of woods, prairie, and streams, plus 3 miles of well-maintained trails, it’s a favorite for midweek resets or peaceful weekend strolls. Great for kids, too!

2. Busiek State Forest and Wildlife Area

About 20 miles south of town, Busiek is one of the spots our team visits when we want a little more of a challenge. You’ve got 18 miles of multi-use trails that wind through forests, over hills, and across creeks (yep, bring waterproof shoes). It’s big enough that it never feels crowded, even on a nice Saturday.

3. Fellows Lake Trails

Just north of Springfield, Fellows Lake has exploded in popularity—and for good reason. There are 25+ miles of natural surface trails here that loop around wooded areas and offer great lake views. It’s peaceful, scenic, and super versatile—hike it, run it, or bring the mountain bike.

4. Frisco Highline Trail

Stretching all the way to Bolivar, this 37.5-mile trail starts in Springfield and follows an old railroad route. The trail surface varies from paved to gravel and cuts through farmland, woods, and small-town Missouri. Flat and beginner-friendly—great for families or casual walks.

5. Ha Ha Tonka State Park

This one’s about an hour and fifteen minutes northeast, near Camdenton, and it’s worth every mile of the drive. You’ve got castle ruins, bluff views, sinkholes, springs, and one of the coolest boardwalk trails in the state. We always recommend this to newcomers looking for a weekend adventure.

6. Cedar Gap Conservation Area

Roughly 30 miles east of Springfield, this one’s more off the beaten path—but that’s part of its charm. The short trail here leads through steep forested hills to a small spring and beautiful overlook. Less traffic, more peace and quiet. Bring good boots and enjoy the solitude.

7. Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield

History meets hiking at Wilson’s Creek, just outside Springfield. You can walk or bike the 4.9-mile tour road and hop on several short trails through historic battlefields and wooded areas. It’s a favorite spot of ours for slower-paced hikes with a little bit of history along the way.

8. Dogwood Canyon Nature Park

This one’s a bit of a splurge (admission required), but if you’re into waterfalls, cliffs, and crystal-clear streams, Dogwood Canyon delivers. Located about 60 miles south, near Lampe, the paved 6.5-mile trail through the canyon is absolutely stunning. Bonus: you can rent bikes or book a tram tour if hiking isn’t your thing.

9. Hercules Glades Wilderness

About 50 miles southeast of Springfield, this is a dream spot for serious hikers. You’ll find over 30 miles of rugged trails through limestone glades, streams, and remote wilderness. It’s less developed than the others on this list—expect to feel like you’re truly off the grid.

10. Lake Springfield Park

Close to home and perfect for a low-key afternoon. You can hike along the water, rent a kayak, or just sit at the boathouse and enjoy the view. Several easy trails wind through the park’s wooded areas and along the lake shore. It’s a go-to for quick nature breaks.

Pro Tips from Our Team

  • Stay hydrated – Missouri humidity can sneak up on you, especially in summer.

  • Watch the weather – Some trails get muddy or flooded after rain.

  • Keep it clean – Pack it in, pack it out. Let’s keep these places beautiful.

  • Go early – Trails are often less crowded and cooler in the morning.

We love the Springfield area not just because we work here—but because we live here. When we’re not helping folks move, you’ll often find us out on these trails, hiking with our families, fishing, or just enjoying the Ozarks air.
